Dr. Koura is currently in private practice in Sacramento. He is on staff at Methodist Hospital and Surgical Director of their Surgical Weight Loss Program.

Dr. Koura started his surgical career as a physician and surgeon at a Missionary Hospital in India. He completed a surgical residency at Syracuse and obtained advanced training in cancer surgery and research at the prestigious M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Koura has been in practice since 1998 and has been performing Weight Loss Surgery since 2001. He moved his practice from North Dakota to Sacramento in 2003 and has established a Surgical Weight Loss Program at Methodist Hospital with the assistance of an excellent team of Nurses and Administrators. As Surgical Director, Dr. Koura is fully involved in all aspects of the program and is committed to providing the best care and support for his patients.

Dr. Koura first became interested in Weight Loss Surgery after realizing that the advice given to most patients to eat less and exercise just was not working. Although hesitant to apply the radical solution of surgery, it was obvious that diet, exercise and medications were not effective enough to significantly impact the health problems or quality of life of obese patients. These patients are in need of an effective and lasting solution.

After initial extensive evaluation of the various operative techniques available, Dr. Koura felt that the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and Lap Band are the best available weight loss surgeries. These surgeries provide well-prepared and committed patients very effective tools for weight loss and long term weight control. Dr. Koura has evaluated and trained to perform the Lap BandŽ, which he believes is also an effective way for patients to obtain a long-term healthy weight while being the least invasive procedure available.

As a bariatric surgeon, Dr. Koura is able to offer his patients a chance to start over, a new beginning if you will, with the proper guidance and commitment towards a longer and healthier life.
